Styling With Purpose: Dressing Jo Lam for the Moments That Matter

Personal styling is about more than putting together a beautiful outfit. At The Élève Initiative, we believe thoughtful styling should help a woman feel confident, comfortable, and completely herself as she steps into the moments that matter. Sometimes those moments mark a new beginning, and sometimes they celebrate years of meaningful work.

We recently had the privilege of styling Jo Lam, founder of Project Beauty, for several special occasions in the Dallas community. Most recently, Jo attended the 60th SMU Women’s Symposium, where she was honored with the Profiles in Leadership Award for her leadership and commitment to advancing the lives of women in the Dallas community.

For us, styling Jo was an opportunity to do what we love: understand the woman, understand the occasion, and create a look that supports both.

Styling the Woman, Not Just the Event

Jo has a warm, vibrant presence and a personal style that can carry color beautifully. When selecting her look, we wanted something polished enough for a significant leadership event while still feeling feminine, modern, and authentic to her personality.

The rich berry-toned dress became the foundation of the look. Its color immediately has presence without feeling overly formal, while the draping through the waist creates a flattering, feminine silhouette. The neckline and softly structured sleeves give the dress personality, but the overall design remains sophisticated enough to move comfortably between professional, philanthropic, and celebratory settings.

Most importantly, Jo looked like Jo in it.

That is always one of our goals when styling a client. We aren't interested in transforming someone into a version of who we think she should be. Good personal styling should reveal more of the woman who is already there.

The Details That Complete a Look

Once we had the dress, we kept the accessories intentional. Rather than introducing another competing color, we paired the berry tone with snakeskin pointed-toe heels. The print adds visual interest and personality, while its neutral palette keeps the overall look balanced.

Jewelry was kept minimal and refined. With a strong dress color and statement shoes, the look didn't need another focal point. Simple jewelry allowed everything to work together without feeling overly styled.

This is an important part of our styling philosophy. More isn't always better. Sometimes the most successful decision is knowing when the outfit is complete.

The final combination felt polished, feminine, confident, and powerful—without overpowering the woman wearing it.

Creating a Look That Can Live Beyond One Event

One of our favorite aspects of Jo's styling was seeing the wardrobe work for more than one occasion. She wore the look across meaningful events, including spaces centered on women, community, giving, and leadership.

We believe versatility should be part of thoughtful personal styling. A beautiful dress shouldn't necessarily have to disappear into the back of a closet after one photograph or special event. When possible, we look for pieces that can become part of a client's existing wardrobe and be worn again in different settings.

Accessories can change. Shoes can change. A jacket can be added. Jewelry can shift the mood. The same foundational piece can often move from a professional gathering to a community event or celebration without feeling repetitive.

For women balancing careers, families, community involvement, and countless other responsibilities, having clothing that works harder can make getting dressed simpler while still allowing them to feel put together.

Dressing for Presence, Not Attention

Styling for an important event also requires understanding the room a woman is walking into.

Jo wasn't simply attending an event. She was entering spaces connected to the work she cares deeply about and, at the SMU Women's Symposium, receiving recognition for that work. Her wardrobe needed to acknowledge the significance of the occasion while allowing the focus to remain where it belonged—on Jo and her accomplishments.

We weren't dressing her for attention. We were dressing her for presence.

There is an important difference. The best event styling doesn't make the clothing more memorable than the person wearing it. Instead, the clothing becomes part of the way she carries herself through the experience. When the fit feels right, the proportions work, and the outfit feels true to her personality, she can stop thinking about what she's wearing and focus on why she's there.

Where Styling and Purpose Meet

Jo's work through Project Beauty made this styling experience especially meaningful. Through the organization, she supports survivors as they rebuild confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of self, bringing together beauty, self-care, and mental wellness as part of the healing process.

There is a natural connection between that philosophy and the work we do at The Élève Initiative. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we believe access to clothing and personal styling can provide meaningful support as women navigate important transitions, opportunities, and milestones.

Clothing alone doesn't create confidence, and an outfit certainly doesn't create someone's accomplishments. Those things belong to the woman. What thoughtful styling can do is remove one uncertainty from an important day and give someone the opportunity to walk into a room feeling prepared, comfortable, and seen.

That is why we call it styling with purpose.

Styled for the Moments That Matter

Seeing Jo wear the pieces we selected across different occasions has been a wonderful reminder of why we do this work. From community events celebrating women and giving to the SMU Women's Symposium, her wardrobe accompanied her into rooms that reflected the very things she has dedicated herself to supporting.

And when she stood alongside other honorees to receive the SMU Profiles in Leadership Award, the dress was simply doing what good styling should do: complementing the woman and allowing her to shine.
